 An Introduction to Spirituality in Healthcare in Aotearoa / New Zealand

 What is it?

A Continuing Professional Development short course for healthcare professionals, focusing on spirituality in healthcare. Run by the Department of General Practice and Rural Health, Dunedin School of Medicine, the course involves a series of interactive workshops facilitated by; Richard Egan a Lecturer in Health Promotion at the Department of Preventive and Social Medicine, Anna Holmes a Clinical Senior Lecturer at the Department of General Practice and Rural Health, and Carl Te Ahuru and Hata Temo from the Southern DHB who have an extensive background in Wairua Maori and Cultural Education in Healthcare.

Why attend?

The course is designed for people working in healthcare who have questions about spirituality and wish to discuss it with others and gain a greater understanding of how it can be incorporated into their work practice. This is not about religion but spirituality which is experienced by both those who are religious and those who are not. It offers an opportunity to increase your understanding of the topic and share your experiences and ideas. The course has a strong evidence and researched-base component, combined with group discussion, which will provide an environment to explore this topic in detail in an intimate and professional manner. Topics covered will include: Meanings of spirituality, Spiritual needs, Spiritual care theory and practice, Maori spirituality (Wairua Maori), and The spiritual well-being of health professionals.

Where & When?

The course will consist of a Friday night introductory session on January 31st, followed by a full day consisting of a further 3 interactive sessions on Saturday February 1st. The course will be held at the department of General Practice and Rural Health at 55 Hanover Street, Dunedin and costs will be $200, including food and refreshments.
